From Bedtime Tea to Cellular Health: What Apigenin Really Does
If you've ever felt more relaxed after a cup of chamomile tea, you've felt apigenin at work. What is apigenin?

Chamomile's reputation as a bedtime drink isn't folklore. Apigenin is the reason for it. Apigenin binds to GABA-A receptors, the system the brain uses to dial down activity and shift toward rest. That's the same target many calming agents act on, and it's why apigenin is recognized as the relaxing component of chamomile.
What makes it appealing is how it works. Apigenin supports the body's natural transition into sleep rather than forcing it, so the effect is calm and settled rather than the heavy grogginess of a sleeping pill. It's the kind of gentle wind-down most people are actually looking for at the end of the day.
The clinical picture backs this up. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that chamomile improved sleep quality and eased general anxiety. That result maps directly onto the GABA-A mechanism apigenin provides, which is why apigenin has become one of the compounds people reach for first when they want natural support for rest.
Why sleep is a longevity issue
It's easy to file sleep under "tomorrow" rather than "the long term." The biology says otherwise. Sleep is when much of the body's repair happens: cellular clean-up, memory consolidation, hormonal reset, and recovery of the immune and metabolic systems. Apigenin acts directly on that enzyme. A landmark study identified apigenin as an inhibitor of CD38, and showed that inhibiting CD38 with apigenin raised NAD+ levels and improved metabolic markers. That's a meaningful distinction: rather than adding raw material like NMN does, apigenin helps slow the drain on the NAD+ the body already has. The two approaches work from opposite ends of the same problem, which is exactly why they belong together in one formula.
Apigenin also acts on senescent cells, the aged cells that stop dividing but stay behind and leak inflammatory signals that speed up aging in the tissue around them. More research found apigenin suppressed that inflammatory output and improved a range of age-related measures.
