The One Antioxidant That Recharges All the Rest: Glutathione

When most people think about antioxidants, they think about food. Vitamin C from citrus, vitamin E from nuts, polyphenols from berries and green tea. All of that matters. But the single most important antioxidant in your body is not one you eat. It is one you make. 

It is called glutathione, and by the time slower recovery and a heavier afternoon start to feel normal, your body is very likely making less of it than it did in your twenties.


The antioxidant your cells build themselves

Glutathione is a small molecule assembled from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Your cells build it in-house and keep it on hand almost everywhere, with especially high concentrations in the liver. Its job is to defend the cell against oxidative stress, the steady background damage caused by reactive oxygen species, which are the unstable byproducts of turning food and oxygen into energy.

What earns glutathione the title of master antioxidant is not only that it neutralizes those molecules directly. It also recycles other antioxidants. When vitamin C and vitamin E do their work and become spent, glutathione helps return them to their active form so they can go again. It sits at the center of the cell's entire antioxidant system rather than working alone. 


Why it matters more as you age

Oxidative stress is one of the recognized hallmarks of aging, and glutathione is one of the body's front-line answers to it. The problem is that the answer gets quieter over time. Across studies, blood glutathione levels tend to decline as adults get older.

Some of that decline comes down to raw materials. Research from Baylor College of Medicine found that older adults can carry a marked glutathione deficiency, driven in part by a shortage of the glycine and cysteine needed to build it, and that this deficiency traveled alongside higher oxidative stress. 

Other work has linked lower glutathione status to a faster decline in measures of executive function over time. None of this means glutathione is a switch you flip, but it does explain why the "master antioxidant" is a molecule worth paying attention to as the years add up.


Can you actually raise it?

For a long time there was a fair question about whether swallowing glutathione does anything at all. The assumption was that the gut would break it down before it ever reached the bloodstream.

A six-month randomized, placebo-controlled trial led by John Richie at Penn State put that assumption to the test in 54 healthy adults. Daily oral glutathione raised glutathione stores throughout the body, with increases of roughly 30 to 35 percent in whole blood, red blood cells, and plasma. 

Markers of immune activity moved as well, with natural killer cell activity roughly doubling in the higher-dose group by three months. A separate, shorter trial using a liposomal form reported blood glutathione rising about 40 percent. Taken consistently, in other words, it moves the needle.


Two ways to support it, not one

There is a second route to better glutathione status, which is to give your body more of what it needs to make its own.

Because glutathione is built from glycine and cysteine, the Baylor researchers tested supplying older adults with glycine and N-acetylcysteine, a combination they nicknamed GlyNAC. 

Over 24 weeks, participants saw their glutathione deficiency corrected alongside improvements in oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, inflammation, muscle strength, gait speed, and cognition. The team called it a "power of three," the combined effect of glycine, cysteine, and the glutathione they build together.

That distinction is worth holding onto. You can supply the antioxidant directly, or you can supply the building blocks your body uses to make more of it. The strongest approach tends to do both.


Why the form on the label matters

If you shop for glutathione, you will usually see it written as L-glutathione, often with the word "reduced" alongside it, and both of those words carry meaning. The "L" refers to the natural, biologically active shape of the molecule, the version your body builds and uses, as opposed to a mirror-image form it has no real use for. 

"Reduced" refers to its state rather than its shape. Glutathione constantly cycles between a reduced form, which is the active one that does the antioxidant work, and an oxidized, spent form it becomes after neutralizing damage. 

Keeping your glutathione working is largely about converting that spent form back into the active one. So when a label reads L-glutathione in its reduced form, it means you are getting the ready-to-work version rather than the used-up one.


How Tmrw thinks about glutathione
